Over the past few years of displaying my art at various art shows around the country I've heard
a lot of great stories and a few rather sad recollections.
Below are a few of my favorite stories that my art has helped others share with me.
Doggy Diner
Before McDonalds, Burger King, etc, there was Doggie Diner in the SF Bay Area.
They had the best hot dogs I've ever tasted! During high school in Alameda in the
early-mid sixties, Doggie Diner was our hangout. It was all we had, and we loved
it! The painting is hanging on my TV room wall near my 50" plasma. I love it!
McDonald's
One couple purchases a McDonald's image as it reminds
them of where they would meet after school. Her mom thought
she was too young to date and have a boyfriend, so she
would tell her parents she's going to McDonald's with
her friends. They later married.
U-Drive
I was doing an art show in Dana Point in a small park
near a shopping center over looking the ocean. A lady
stopped by as she saw the painting while driving by. She
was on her way to the grocery store to purchase some items
for the dinner celebrating her son's last night with them
as in the morning he was moving away for college. The
painting brought back memories for her of learning to
fish with her grandfather who lived on Balboa Island.
She would visit him in the summer and under this sign
was their favorite fishing spot.
Bob's Big Boy
A gentleman saw me at a show in Los Angeles while he had
been driving by running errands. He stopped at the light,
he looked over and saw my Bob's Big Boy image. He said
that he just had to have it. I asked what his story was,
and almost as if anticipating my question, he unfolded
his memory of "Bob." 1962 - His mom, a single
mother would wake him up from sleep in his PJ's, and place
him in the back of the car early in the morning. They
drove to the valley where his mom works two shifts as
a waitress. She would crack the window and leave him asleep
in the car. When he awoke, the first thing he saw was, as
he says, "That damn statue." He would get dressed
and go inside for breakfast. After the crew got tired
of him he would retreat back to the car and read comic
books. This is how he spent his summer vacation.
Vegas
Can't share these ones. Everything that happens in Vegas
stays in Vegas!
Phillipe's
For anyone who hasn't experienced Phillipe's, they are
a restaurant in downtown Los Angeles, and the originators
of the "Beef Dip Sandwich." Everyone stands
in line to place their order at the counter where your
food is prepared before you. Sometimes the lines are 10
across and 20 - 30 feet long. The lady who bought this
painting had emailed me months after seeing me at the
Beverly Hills show and wanted to know if I had a Phillipe's
available as her girlfriend had just gotten engaged. The
girlfriend had met her future fiance in the line at Phillipe's
a year earlier. This painting was going to be their wedding
gift.
Mr. Bubble
This past November my partner Julie
bought me one of your Mr. Bubble paintings while we were
in Palm Springs. I shared with you that I had a collection
of Mr. Bubble memorabilia as my grandfather was the inventor
of Mr. Bubble. I forwarded you photos of my grandfather
and me. Also included is a photo of my brother and me
on the back of a box of Mr. Bubble for a promotion for
a free T-shirt in the mid '70s. Hope all is well with
you, and I love the painting.
Multiple Bob's
Six years ago at my cousins wedding I fell for an out
of state guest. We were both in the wedding party and
walked down the aisle together. He was interested but
not sure about a long distance relationship. We really
hit it off and went out for a date two days after the
wedding. We fondly talked about our childhood growing
up in So. Cal and Bob's Big Boy. He went back home to
Altanta the next day. I knew this was a special guy and
I wanted to send a message that I was worth the distance,
so I made a card and included a plastic Bob's Big Boy
piggy bank that I had had for years in a Fed-ex box and
sent it off. The card simply said if your at all interested
call me. Well, Bob did the trick, he called me and we
have been together ever since (he moved back home to California).
So when we saw your painting at the Town Center Gallery
in Valencia, CA we just had to have it! We just love it!
Thank you !!!
Dive Motel
I am a diver and when I saw your painting,
"Dive Motel," I absolutely had to have it! I
have been diving for 13 years and I have a full ride scholarship
to the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Diving
has been a huge part of my life and my family's life because
my older brother and I are divers and my parents are very
involved and supportive. The motel background relates
to our diving life, too, because my brother and I grew
up competing and travelling all over the United States.
The motel just reminds me of how our team would stay at
hotels/motels and always play in the pool! My family and
I think "Dive Motel" is so cool! I absolutely
love it! I'm going to take it back to school with me and
hang it in my room. Thank you!
Do you have a great story that you're reminded of by one
of my paintings?
Please share it! Fill in the form to send me your story,
and I'll post it to the website.
